British forces seized a suspected Russian shadow-fleet oil tanker during a coordinated operation in the English Channel. The UK government confirmed the vessel, Smyrtos, attempted to transit British waters before authorities intercepted it. Officials described the mission as another significant step against Russia’s financial support network for the Ukraine conflict.
Strategic Operation Targets Russian Oil Network
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the successful seizure early Sunday after a six-hour military operation. Royal Marine Commandos led the boarding alongside National Crime Agency officers. Meanwhile, Chinook helicopters, military aircraft, a frigate, and a minehunter supported the mission.
Authorities said the tanker sailed under the Cameroon flag during the attempted transit. Afterward, officials moved the vessel toward an anchorage off England’s southern coast. They will continue monitoring environmental and safety conditions throughout the investigation.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the operation following its successful completion. He said the mission delivered another blow against Russia’s shadow fleet. Furthermore, Starmer warned those supporting President Vladimir Putin’s war that Britain remains determined. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis also praised the professionalism and courage displayed throughout the operation.
Ukraine Welcomes Britain’s Decisive Action
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Britain’s action and thanked Starmer and the British people. He argued Russia’s energy revenues helped finance its military campaign against Ukraine.
Therefore, Zelenskyy urged European nations to strengthen legal measures against shadow-fleet operations. He also called for authorities to confiscate oil cargoes carried by sanctioned vessels. British officials believe disrupting Russian oil shipments will reduce funding for Moscow’s military operations. Consequently, the seizure marks another effort to increase economic pressure on Russia while supporting Ukraine.
