Naturalization marks shift in UAE cricket policy
The United Arab Emirates has granted citizenship to five cricketers in a landmark decision that marks a historic first for the sport in the country. Authorities awarded nationality to Khuzaima Tanveer, Ajay Kumar, Akshdeep Nath, Harpreet Bhatia, and Adeeb Usmani through naturalization, according to reports. As a result, these players have become the first cricketers to receive Emirati citizenship.
Previously, the UAE granted citizenship to athletes in sports such as football, rugby, and judo following a 2018 presidential decree. However, cricket largely relied on foreign players who qualified under the International Cricket Councilโs three-year residency rule. Now, this move signals a significant policy shift, allowing selected players to fully integrate into the national framework.
Players gain eligibility as full citizens
With citizenship secured, all five cricketers can now represent the UAE as full passport holders rather than residency-based players. Consequently, this change strengthens the national teamโs long-term structure and identity. Officials expect the decision to boost stability and commitment within the squad.
Currently, the players are part of a 17-member UAE squad touring Nepal, where they are set to compete in two T20 matches and a tri-nation One Day International series. Meanwhile, team members have expressed optimism about the opportunity.
Ajay Kumar said that representing the UAE had been his goal since he first arrived in the country. Furthermore, the decision reflects the nationโs broader strategy to develop cricket and reward consistent performers. Overall, this milestone highlights the UAEโs evolving approach to sports development and national representation.
