The government has set a two-month deadline for completing the Multan-Muzaffargarh-Mianwali highway. It has also ordered fresh planning for several major road projects.
Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan issued the directions during a meeting on ongoing highway schemes. The meeting also reviewed proposals for new road infrastructure across the country.
NHA Given Two-Month Deadline
Khan directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to complete the Multan-Muzaffargarh-Mianwali highway within two months.
He also instructed officials to ensure that all required safety features reach full implementation. The directive comes as authorities review progress on several highway development projects.
Meanwhile, officials discussed the expansion of the Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad section of the M-4 Motorway. They decided to construct safety railings as part of the expansion work.
The minister also stressed the need to complete ongoing development projects without unnecessary delays.
Mansehra-Naran Road Project Moves Forward
The meeting also focused on a proposed model road between Mansehra and Naran. Khan directed the NHA to prepare a feasibility study for the 123-kilometre project.
According to the minister, the proposed route could support both tourism and trade with China. However, the project remains at the feasibility stage.
The NHA will therefore assess the proposal before further development decisions are taken.
Govt Pushes Guru Nanak Expressway Plan
The NHA also decided to move ahead with international tendering for the Guru Nanak Expressway.
Khan highlighted the project’s religious significance for the Sikh community. He also called for international investment to support the expressway.
The government plans to invite Sikh communities in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States to invest in the project.
This approach could bring overseas investment into the proposed road infrastructure project.
GT Road Sections Also Reviewed
Officials also examined construction work on different sections of the GT Road between Rawalpindi and Peshawar.
The review formed part of the broader assessment of ongoing highway projects. Khan instructed the NHA to maintain progress while ensuring proper safety standards.
In addition, the minister directed officials to improve facilities available to travellers on new highways.
Rest Areas and Green Belts Made a Priority
Khan instructed the NHA to provide rest areas and washrooms on both sides of new highways.
He also called for newly completed projects to remain safe and visually appealing. Furthermore, the authority decided to make green belts mandatory on new highways and motorways.
The minister directed the NHA to formally include horticulture in its road development projects.
As a result, future highway schemes will also focus on roadside landscaping alongside construction and safety requirements.
Government Seeks Faster Completion of Road Projects
The latest directives place greater emphasis on timely completion, safety and supporting facilities across highway projects.
The NHA will now work on the two-month completion target for the Multan-Muzaffargarh-Mianwali highway. At the same time, it will prepare the feasibility study for the Mansehra-Naran route.
The authority will also proceed with the Guru Nanak Expressway’s international tendering process. Meanwhile, work on other road sections will continue under the government’s latest instructions.
Khan ultimately directed the NHA to accelerate ongoing development projects while maintaining safety, public facilities and environmental improvements.
