Pakistan’s security forces foiled an attempted infiltration from Afghanistan into Kurram district, killing 12 militants and Afghan Taliban personnel during an intense exchange of fire, the military’s media wing said on Sunday.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), troops detected a group attempting to approach the international border from Afghanistan on October 10. Security personnel engaged the group and prevented the infiltration attempt.
However, Afghan Taliban posts also opened fire to support the infiltrators, intensifying the border confrontation. The military said the exchange resulted in the deaths of 12 militants and Afghan Taliban personnel.
Naib Subedar Hidayat Aman, 40, from Ghizer district, was martyred during the firefight.
Security Forces Launch Follow-Up Operation
Following the engagement, security forces launched a sanitisation operation to search the area and eliminate any remaining militants. Authorities said the operation aimed to ensure that no infiltrators remained in the vicinity.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to defending Pakistan’s borders and continuing counterterrorism operations under the Azm-e-Istehkam initiative, approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan.
Furthermore, the military accused Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities of failing to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to carry out cross-border attacks. It alleged that their actions had facilitated terrorism and said Kabul had not fulfilled its international counterterrorism obligations.
Border Tensions Persist Amid Rising Attacks
The latest incident occurred two days after security forces killed seven militants during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Several militant hideouts were also destroyed during that operation, according to the military.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has experienced a rise in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Security officials have repeatedly urged Afghan authorities to prevent armed groups from operating from their territory.
Islamabad and Kabul have held multiple rounds of talks, but disagreements over cross-border militancy remain unresolved. Pakistan continues to maintain that stronger action is needed to prevent attacks against its security personnel and civilians.
