Officials Discuss Investment, Defence Cooperation and Economic Growth
ANKARA: Türkiye and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic relations, with senior officials discussing measures to expand bilateral trade, modernise their free trade agreement and increase investment cooperation.
Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat announced the development after hosting UK Minister of State for Trade Chris Bryant at the Turkish Trade Ministry on Wednesday.
According to Bolat, the discussions focused on advancing the economic partnership between the two countries through deeper trade integration, enhanced business collaboration and the modernisation of the existing free trade framework.
The meeting also covered a range of strategic issues, including Türkiye’s relations with the European Union, defence industry cooperation, increased engagement between private-sector stakeholders and the development of joint projects in third countries.
Bolat described the talks as productive and emphasized the strong economic foundations already established between Ankara and London.
Trade Volume Reaches $24 Billion
Meanwhile, the Turkish minister highlighted the continued growth in bilateral commerce, noting that trade between the two countries reached $24 billion in 2025.
He said the figure reflects the significant potential of economic ties and demonstrates the resilience of commercial relations despite global economic uncertainties.
Furthermore, officials reviewed progress in ongoing free trade negotiations, with the fifth round of discussions taking place this week. Both sides expressed optimism about reaching an updated agreement that could further improve market access and economic cooperation.
Target Set for Higher Economic Integration
Bolat stated that Türkiye and the UK have set a joint target of increasing bilateral trade to $40 billion following the successful completion of free trade negotiations.
He added that a modernised agreement would make trade more competitive, integrated and beneficial for businesses in both countries.
Additionally, the minister stressed that Türkiye will continue serving as a reliable partner for British companies through its strong manufacturing base, strategic geographic location and advanced supply chain infrastructure.
Both governments agreed to continue working together to promote trade, encourage investment, support business communities and explore new areas of economic cooperation aimed at delivering long-term growth and prosperity for both nations.
