US President Donald Trump on Monday warned Iran of serious consequences, stating Washington would respond forcefully to any attack on American vessels. In an interview with Fox News, he said ships operating under Project Freedom would receive full military protection if threatened.
Military posture strengthens amid rising threats
Trump emphasized that the United States possesses advanced weapons and remains fully prepared to counter any aggression. Moreover, he described operations in the Strait of Hormuz as a major strategic effort, calling them among the most significant in recent times. While issuing the warning, he also noted that Iran appeared more flexible in ongoing negotiations, although he did not elaborate further.
Meanwhile, tensions have intensified as both countries exchange strong statements over maritime security. The US military confirmed that two guided-missile destroyers entered the Gulf to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels. Additionally, two American merchant ships successfully transited the Strait despite reported Iranian resistance.
Shipping incidents raise international concern
At the same time, a fire and explosion were reported aboard a vessel operated by South Korean shipping company HMM. Authorities in Seoul said they were investigating whether the Panama-flagged ship was attacked, although no casualties occurred among the 24 crew members on board.
Consequently, Trump urged South Korea to join US-led efforts to protect shipping routes in the region. South Koreaโs foreign ministry stated it would coordinate closely with partner nations and take necessary steps to safeguard vessels and crew.
Furthermore, officials confirmed that several South Korean-flagged ships remain stranded in the Strait, underscoring growing risks to global trade and maritime stability.
