Beijing Confirms High-Level State Visit
China confirmed on Monday that US President Donald Trump will visit the country from May 13 to 15 for high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid growing geopolitical and economic tensions.
A spokesperson for Chinaโs foreign ministry announced that Xi invited Trump for the official state visit, which marks the first trip by a US president to China since 2017.
Originally, Trump planned to travel to Beijing in late March or early April. However, he postponed the visit to focus on the escalating conflict involving Iran.
Meanwhile, officials from Washington indicated that Trump intends to discuss Iran, regional security concerns, and trade relations during meetings with Chinese leadership.
The United States and China remain divided over several major issues, including tariffs, Taiwan, and tensions linked to the Middle East conflict.
Trade and Iran Expected to Dominate Discussions
US officials said Trump hopes to encourage Beijing to use its influence regarding Iran while also attempting to reduce economic tensions between the worldโs two largest economies.
China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, particularly through independent โteapotโ refineries that import discounted crude from Tehran.
Additionally, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly described the visit as highly significant both symbolically and diplomatically.
She stated that Trump aims to secure favorable agreements for the United States during the trip.
The White House also announced that the visit will include formal ceremonies, a state banquet, and cultural events in Beijing, including a planned tour of the historic Temple of Heaven.
Consequently, analysts expect the meetings to shape future discussions on trade, regional security, and diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing.
