Remarks Highlight Differences Over Lebanon Strategy
PARIS: US President Donald Trump suggested that Syria could play a greater role in addressing security challenges in Lebanon, signaling growing differences with Israel over the ongoing conflict involving Hezbollah.
Speaking during a meeting with Qatari officials on the sidelines of the G7 summit, Trump praised Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and questioned Israel’s handling of the Lebanon front. He said Syria could potentially manage the situation more effectively if efforts to weaken Hezbollah continue to produce heavy civilian casualties.
The remarks came as negotiations surrounding a proposed US-Iran understanding continue to influence broader regional dynamics. Observers note that issues such as stability in Lebanon, maritime security, sanctions relief, and regional de-escalation have become closely linked in ongoing diplomatic discussions.
At the same time, analysts argue that Lebanon has emerged as a key component of wider negotiations involving Tehran and Washington, making developments on the Lebanese front increasingly significant for regional diplomacy.
Damascus Signals Caution on Military Involvement
Despite Trump’s comments, Syrian officials have repeatedly indicated that they do not intend to become militarily involved in Lebanon. Damascus has instead focused on strengthening border coordination, improving bilateral relations with Beirut, and supporting efforts to stabilise both countries.
Furthermore, Syrian authorities remain engaged in discussions concerning border security, anti-smuggling measures, and regional cooperation. Officials have stressed that military intervention in Lebanon is not currently part of their agenda.
Regional partners, including Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, continue to support Syria’s reconstruction and institutional development. Both countries have also backed efforts aimed at reinforcing Lebanon’s sovereignty and strengthening state institutions.
Uncertainty Surrounds Future Negotiations
Meanwhile, diplomatic discussions between Israel and Lebanon are expected to continue in the coming days. However, several key questions remain unresolved, including the future deployment of forces in southern Lebanon, Israeli military positions, and ongoing plans related to Hezbollah’s weapons.
