Trump Says Khamenei Is Part of Negotiation Process
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be willing to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as indirect talks between Washington and Tehran continue.
Trump made the remarks while speaking about the ongoing diplomatic process with Iran. He said Khamenei was involved in the negotiations and suggested that Iranian decision-making still depends heavily on the approval of the supreme leader.
When asked whether Khamenei was among the Iranian leaders in contact with the U.S. side, Trump replied, “He’s involved. Absolutely.”
He added that Iranian officials appeared to hold Khamenei in high regard. Trump also said the current communication between both sides seemed to be moving in a positive direction.
“We seem to be getting along quite well,” Trump said.
Health and Leadership Questions Remain in Focus
Trump was also asked about Khamenei’s health. He said he had not personally met the Iranian leader and could not confirm his condition.
“I don’t know. I haven’t had the privilege of meeting him,” Trump said. He added that he had heard reports suggesting Khamenei was not doing well.
The U.S. president was further asked who was making key decisions in Iran during the negotiations. Trump said Iranian officials had indicated that Khamenei was giving approval.
“They say he is giving approval, because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time,” Trump said.
His comments highlight the continued importance of Iran’s top leadership in any possible agreement with the United States.
Possible Meeting Could Mark Major Diplomatic Shift
When asked if he would like to meet the Iranian supreme leader, Trump said he would consider it.
“It’s a very good question. I’ll think of it. Yeah, I’d like to meet him,” Trump said.
He added that he was open to meeting different leaders if such meetings could help move diplomacy forward.
“We probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” he said.
The remarks come as U.S.-Iran indirect negotiations remain closely watched by regional and international observers. Any direct meeting between Trump and Khamenei would mark a major diplomatic development.
Such a meeting would also signal a possible shift in tone between Washington and Tehran after years of tension over nuclear issues, sanctions and regional security concerns.
For now, Trump’s comments suggest that the U.S. side sees Iran’s top leadership as central to any future breakthrough.
