WASHINGTON/BEIJING: US President Donald Trump departed for China on Wednesday for a major summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that Washington does not require Beijing’s assistance to end the ongoing conflict with Iran or ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Before leaving Washington, Trump told reporters that the United States would prevail in the confrontation with Iran “peacefully or otherwise.” He also dismissed suggestions that China could play a decisive role in resolving the crisis despite Beijing’s close economic and political ties with Tehran.
Moreover, the summit comes as both Iran and the United States remain deeply divided over conditions for ending the conflict. Washington has demanded that Tehran abandon its nuclear program and loosen control over maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has called for compensation, an end to sanctions, and a halt to military operations across the region.
Oil Routes and Global Markets Under Pressure
Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that carries nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies. Reports indicated that a Chinese supertanker carrying Iraqi crude attempted passage through the strait on Wednesday.
Furthermore, sources claimed Iran has strengthened regional energy arrangements with Iraq and Pakistan to maintain oil and liquefied natural gas exports despite ongoing tensions.
The International Energy Agency warned that the conflict could reduce global oil supplies significantly through 2026. Brent crude prices also remained elevated following recent maritime disruptions in the Gulf region.
Political and Military Tensions Continue
The Pentagon stated that the cost of the conflict has reached $29 billion, while recent polls showed growing public concern among American voters regarding the war.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed several people near Beirut as clashes involving Iran-backed Hezbollah continued despite ceasefire efforts. Iranian forces also conducted military drills near the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional tensions.
