BEIJING: US President Donald Trump received a ceremonial welcome at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday before crucial talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping focused on trade, regional tensions, and Taiwan.
Chinese officials welcomed Trump with military honours, a brass band, and children waving American and Chinese flags as both leaders shook hands and walked together along the red carpet. The visit marks Trumpโs first trip to China since returning to office in 2025 and his first official Beijing visit since 2017.
Meanwhile, several leading business figures joined the US delegation, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang. Trump stated that one of his key objectives would be encouraging China to expand access for American industries.
Trade, Iran and Taiwan Dominate Agenda
During the two-day summit, both leaders are expected to discuss their fragile trade truce reached last October, under which Washington suspended major tariffs while Beijing eased restrictions on rare earth exports.
In addition, the United States reportedly seeks increased Chinese purchases of Boeing aircraft, agricultural products, and energy supplies to reduce the trade deficit. China, however, wants Washington to ease restrictions on semiconductor technology and chipmaking equipment exports.
The leaders are also expected to address the Iran conflict, artificial intelligence cooperation, and broader economic coordination.
Shifting Power Dynamics Shape Summit
Analysts noted that global political dynamics have shifted significantly since Trumpโs last Beijing visit. While China previously sought stronger recognition from Washington, experts now believe the United States increasingly acknowledges Chinaโs growing global influence.
Furthermore, US arms sales to Taiwan remain a major concern for Beijing. Chinese officials recently repeated strong opposition to a proposed $14-billion American weapons package for Taiwan.
Despite ongoing tensions, both governments appear eager to maintain stable economic relations and avoid further escalation between the worldโs two largest economies.
