US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the United States will reach an agreement with Iran within the next week to extend the current ceasefire and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking during a phone interview with ABC News, Trump said discussions were progressing positively despite a brief setback earlier in the day. He stated that the situation quickly improved after diplomatic efforts addressed concerns linked to regional tensions.
According to Trump, Iranian officials became upset following Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Consequently, he intervened by communicating with both Hezbollah representatives and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He claimed that his efforts helped halt further exchanges of fire between the two sides.
Moreover, Trump described a potential peace agreement with Iran as a more significant achievement than a military victory. He emphasized that negotiations remain complex because of longstanding hostility and the scale of the issues involved. However, he added that both sides continue to make progress toward reaching mutually acceptable terms.
Trump said negotiators are working on final details related to the ceasefire extension and a memorandum of understanding aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, he noted that several outstanding issues still require resolution before a final agreement can be signed.
Meanwhile, Lebanon announced that Hezbollah had accepted a US-backed proposal to stop attacks on Israel in exchange for Israel ending strikes on Beirutโs southern suburbs. The arrangement emerged after Trump reported holding productive discussions with the group through intermediaries.
Furthermore, Trump stated that he successfully persuaded both Israel and Hezbollah to de-escalate tensions. In a post on Truth Social, he confirmed that no troops would be deployed to Beirut and that forces already heading toward the Lebanese capital had been recalled.
He also said Hezbollah agreed to stop attacks, while Israel committed to refraining from further military action under the understanding reached through diplomatic channels.
