Leaders Endorse Agreement Aimed at Reducing Regional Tensions
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) intended to end the conflict between the United States and Iran, marking a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
According to officials, the White House later released footage of the signing, confirming Trumpโs participation in the agreement process. A US official stated that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the document, while Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf completed digital signatures under Trumpโs supervision.
The agreement is designed to establish a framework for de-escalation and launch a new phase of negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Tehran Outlines Position on Nuclear and Missile Issues
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei clarified Tehranโs position on several key issues linked to the agreement.
He stated that Iranโs nuclear materials would remain inside the country and emphasized that the agreement allows the option of uranium dilution rather than transferring materials abroad.
Baghaei also reiterated that Iranโs ballistic missile programme remains outside the scope of negotiations. He stressed that the countryโs defensive capabilities are not open for discussion with any foreign party and described the missile programme as a matter of national security.
Additionally, he warned that continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon would be viewed by Tehran as a violation of commitments connected to the agreement.
Sixty-Day Framework Enters Into Force
Furthermore, Baghaei said negotiations to establish mechanisms for implementing the MoU would begin immediately. He described the arrangement as a system of โcommitment in exchange for commitmentโ between both sides.
According to the Iranian official, the United States has committed to removing obstacles affecting Iranโs frozen financial assets and is expected to refrain from imposing new sanctions or expanding its military presence during the 60-day period.
He also called for restrictions on Iranian oil exports to be eased during the implementation phase.
While discussions regarding a possible meeting in Switzerland remain under review, officials indicated that further diplomatic engagement could follow as both sides work to advance the agreement.
