Boeing has confirmed that China will purchase 200 aircraft in an initial order announced during US President Donald Trumpโs visit to Beijing.
The agreement marks a significant breakthrough for Boeing. More importantly, it reopens the Chinese market after years without a major order.
Trump said the deal could eventually grow to 750 aircraft. If that happens, it would become one of the largest aviation orders in history.
Boeing Calls Deal a Major Milestone
Boeing said the trip to China achieved its key objective.
“We had a very successful trip to China and accomplished our major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft.”
The company added:
“This included an initial commitment for 200 aircraft, and we expect further commitments will follow after this initial tranche.”
Boeing also thanked the Trump administration “for making this milestone happen.”
As a result, the US manufacturer expects to strengthen its position in one of the worldโs biggest aviation markets.
Trump Says Order Could Rise to 750 Jets
Trump described the deal as a major win for the US economy.
Speaking after the trip, he said China had made “a promise of 750 planes, which will be by far the largest order ever, if they do a good job with the 200.”
He also praised the aircraft involved in the agreement.
“He (Xi) committed to 200 Boeings, big ones, 777s, and 737s, and a lot of big, big ones, big, beautiful Boeing planes.”
If expanded, the deal could surpass previous record-setting aircraft orders.
Estimated Value Runs Into Billions
Industry estimates place the value of the 200-aircraft order between $17 billion and $19 billion.
However, the total could reach $25 billion if more wide-body jets are included.
The order is expected to feature a mix of:
- Boeing 737 MAX aircraft
- Boeing 777 jets
- Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft
Therefore, the agreement could generate thousands of jobs across the US aerospace sector.
First Major Chinese Boeing Order Since 2017
China last placed a major Boeing order in 2017, also during Trumpโs first visit to Beijing. That agreement included 300 aircraft and was valued at $37 billion.
Since then, Boeing has struggled to secure new Chinese orders. Meanwhile, rival Airbus gained significant market share. This new commitment could help Boeing close that gap.
Why China Needs More Aircraft
Chinaโs domestic aviation market continues to expand rapidly. At the same time, production of the locally built COMAC C919 has not met expectations.
As a result, Chinese airlines still depend heavily on foreign manufacturers. The Boeing order would provide additional capacity as passenger demand continues to rise.
Challenges Still Remain
Despite the positive announcement, some concerns remain. Analysts note that Chinese buyers want certainty regarding parts supply and after-sales support.
Past tensions between Washington and Beijing created doubts over future export restrictions. Even so, the new agreement suggests both sides are willing to strengthen commercial ties.
Strategic Win for Trump and Boeing
The deal offers a timely boost for both Boeing and Trump. For Boeing, it restores access to a critical market. For Trump, it provides evidence that his diplomatic outreach is producing economic results.
If China follows through with additional purchases, this initial 200-aircraft order could mark the beginning of a much larger partnership.
