BEIJING: US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a high-profile summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aiming to strengthen trade ties while also discussing tensions in the Middle East and regional security issues.
Before departing Washington, Trump said he would urge Xi to provide greater access for American companies in China. In a social media statement, the US president described Xi as a distinguished leader and expressed hope that expanded cooperation would help boost Chinaโs economy further.
Moreover, several leading American business executives joined the visit. Nvidia chief Jensen Huang travelled aboard Air Force One during a stop in Alaska, while Tesla CEO Elon Musk also accompanied the presidential delegation. Apple CEO Tim Cook and other senior corporate leaders are expected to participate in meetings in Beijing.
Trade and Taiwan Expected to Dominate Talks
Trumpโs visit marks the first trip by a US president to China in nearly a decade. The packed schedule includes formal meetings with Xi on Thursday and Friday, alongside a state banquet and ceremonial events at the Great Hall of the People.
Furthermore, both sides are expected to discuss extending a temporary truce in their ongoing tariff dispute. The leaders will also address rare earth exports, artificial intelligence competition, and broader economic cooperation between the worldโs two largest economies.
Trump additionally stated that he plans to discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with Xi, a topic that remains highly sensitive for Beijing.
Middle East Tensions Add Pressure
Meanwhile, the conflict involving Iran is expected to feature prominently during the summit. Trump said he anticipated a lengthy conversation with Xi regarding Iran, which exports much of its sanctioned oil to China.
Chinese officials have recently increased diplomatic efforts encouraging mediation and regional stability. Analysts believe the summit could influence both global trade relations and geopolitical tensions in Asia and the Middle East.
