Goalless Battle Ends in Penalty Drama
Switzerland reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a tense goalless draw in Vancouver on Tuesday.
The last-16 clash was tight from the opening whistle. Both teams defended with discipline and struggled to create clear chances in normal time. Colombia had arrived with strong defensive form, having conceded only once in their first four matches. Switzerland also proved difficult to break down.
The match was also the final game of the 2026 World Cup to be played outside the United States. After 120 minutes without a goal, the contest was decided from the penalty spot.
Kobel Saves, Vargas Scores Decisive Penalty
Both teams missed penalties during the shootout, but Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel became the hero. He produced a brilliant save to deny Cucho Hernandez and give Switzerland the advantage.
Ruben Vargas then stepped forward and calmly scored the decisive penalty. His successful spot-kick sealed a 4-3 shootout win and sent Switzerland into the last eight.
Colombiaโs passionate supporters had once again created a powerful atmosphere in Vancouver. However, their team could not find a breakthrough despite late pressure and several promising moments in extra time.
Switzerland Set Up Argentina Quarter-Final
The first major chance of the match came in the 21st minute. Kobel was forced into a flying save to stop Gustavo Puertaโs curling shot from outside the penalty area.
Switzerland improved after the first hydration break. Camilo Vargas saved well from Fabian Rieder and later denied Dan Ndoye. Still, neither side found the finishing touch before half-time.
Switzerland began the second half strongly, but Colombia also pushed forward. Luis Suarez wasted a chance by firing wide. Both managers made several substitutions, but the game remained locked at 0-0.
Extra time finally brought more attacking urgency. Jhon Lucumi headed against the crossbar from a corner, while Kobel made another important save from Jaminton Campaz. At the other end, Vargas denied substitute Zeki Amdouni with a diving stop.
Campaz then missed a golden chance to win the match late in extra time. That miss proved costly as Switzerland held their nerve in the shootout.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday. Argentina booked their place in the quarter-finals after beating Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta.
The victory marks a historic moment for Switzerland. It is their first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 1954, when they hosted the tournament.
