Extreme Weather Tears Through Homes and Roads
Powerful storms across Indiaโs northern state of Uttar Pradesh have killed at least 111 people, according to government officials. The deadly weather struck multiple districts on Wednesday and caused widespread destruction across the heavily populated region.
Strong winds, lightning strikes, and torrential rain battered towns and villages for several hours. Television footage showed roofs ripped from buildings, massive trees crashing onto roads, and debris scattered across residential areas. Authorities said the number of casualties increased as more districts submitted damage and death reports.
Officials from the state Relief Commissionerโs office initially confirmed 89 deaths and 72 injuries. More than 200 homes were also reported damaged during the violent storm system. However, updated figures released later raised the death toll to 111 people.
Some local media organizations reported even higher numbers. The Times of India placed the death toll at 117, though independent confirmation remained unavailable at the time.
Uttar Pradesh, home to more than 240 million residents, regularly faces severe storms before the arrival of the annual monsoon season. Lightning strikes and sudden windstorms are common during the summer months and frequently lead to casualties.
Viral Video Shows Labourer Thrown Into Air by Fierce Winds
One shocking incident from the storms gained nationwide attention after a dramatic video circulated across Indian media platforms. The footage appeared to show a labourer being lifted high into the air as powerful winds tore away a large tin roof in the Bareilly district.
The video could not be independently verified immediately. However, local news agency PTI later interviewed the survivor in hospital. The man, identified as labourer Nanhe Ansari, described the terrifying moment he was swept into the air by intense gusts.
Ansari said he and several others were attempting to secure a loose tin sheet using ropes when the weather suddenly turned violent. According to his account, a powerful gust lifted both him and the sheet metal into the air.
He said he was carried nearly 50 feet high before being thrown around 80 feet away into a flooded maize field. Ansari survived the fall and was later taken to hospital with injuries.
The incident highlighted the terrifying force of the storm system that moved across northern India. Videos and images shared online showed collapsed structures, damaged vehicles, uprooted electric poles, and flooded roads in several districts.
Climate Experts Warn of Rising Extreme Weather Events
Indiaโs weather department has repeatedly warned about increasing extreme weather events linked to changing climate conditions and rising temperatures. Experts say intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and deadly lightning incidents are becoming more frequent across several parts of the country.
Meteorologists explained that the destructive weather in Uttar Pradesh was part of widespread pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity triggered by unstable atmospheric conditions. The combination of heat, moisture, and sudden pressure changes created ideal conditions for severe storms.
State authorities have instructed local officials to provide emergency financial assistance to affected families. Rescue teams and disaster response workers continue relief operations in the hardest-hit areas.
Officials are also assessing infrastructure damage as residents struggle to recover from one of the deadliest storm outbreaks in the region this year.
