Students Protest Google’s Project Nimbus Contract
More than 100 Stanford University graduates staged a walkout during Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s commencement address, turning the graduation ceremony into a visible protest over the company’s ties with the Israeli government.
The graduates left the venue while Pichai was speaking. Many of them chanted “Free Palestine” as they walked out. The protest was aimed at Project Nimbus, a major cloud computing contract involving Google and the Israeli government.
The demonstration highlighted growing student anger over the role of major technology companies in government and military-linked contracts. It also showed how the war in Gaza and wider Palestine-related activism continue to affect university campuses in the United States.
Pichai, who is one of Stanford’s most prominent alumni, had been invited to address graduates at the ceremony. However, part of the audience used the moment to raise concerns about Google’s business relationship with Israel.
Protesters Target Tech Industry’s Role in Conflict
Project Nimbus has become a major focus for activists who oppose technology partnerships with the Israeli government. Critics argue that cloud services and artificial intelligence tools can strengthen state surveillance, military systems and security operations.
The Stanford walkout reflected wider criticism from students, workers and rights groups who believe technology companies should be held accountable for how their products and services are used.
The protesters said their action was not only directed at Pichai as an individual. It was also meant to pressure Google and other major firms to reconsider contracts linked to governments accused of human rights violations.
The chanting of “Free Palestine” during the ceremony made the protest highly visible. It also placed Stanford among several elite universities where graduation events have become platforms for political expression.
Campus Activism Continues Across US Universities
The walkout comes amid rising campus activism across the United States. Students at several universities have held demonstrations, sit-ins and public protests related to Gaza, Palestine and corporate involvement in the conflict.
For many graduates, commencement is usually a moment of celebration. At Stanford, however, the ceremony also became a space for political dissent.
Supporters of the protest said the students used their public platform to speak against injustice. Critics may argue that graduation ceremonies should remain focused on academic achievement.
Still, the action showed the growing pressure facing technology leaders, universities and corporations over their positions on global conflicts.
The Stanford protest is likely to add to continuing debate over Project Nimbus, corporate responsibility and the role of technology in modern warfare and surveillance.
