PAKPATTAN: A stampede during the annual Urs celebrations of Baba Farid in Pakpattan on Monday left 89 devotees injured after overcrowding triggered panic at the religious gathering.
According to officials, 25 seriously injured pilgrims were shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, 64 people with minor injuries received first aid and medical assistance at the scene.
Emergency Response Underway
The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to participate in the annual Urs festivities. The large crowd reportedly caused congestion, leading to the stampede.
Furthermore, emergency responders and medical teams arrived quickly to assist the injured and restore order. Rescue personnel transported the seriously wounded to nearby hospitals, while medical staff treated others on-site.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities have been reported. They continue to monitor the condition of those receiving medical care.
Investigation into the Incident
Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the stampede. Officials have also urged visitors to follow safety instructions and cooperate with security personnel during the remaining celebrations.
The annual Urs of Baba Farid is one of Pakistan’s largest religious gatherings. Every year, hundreds of thousands of devotees travel to Pakpattan to offer prayers and participate in spiritual ceremonies.
In addition, visitors attend qawwali performances and the opening of the historic Bahishti Darwaza, an event that traditionally attracts massive crowds from across the country.
Officials are expected to review crowd management and security arrangements to prevent similar incidents during the remainder of the festival.
