Yemen’s Houthis today claimed responsibility for a large-scale missile and drone attacks targeting King Khalid Air Base in Saudi Arabia’s Khamis Mushait.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group launched dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at the military facility. He claimed the operation targeted aircraft hangars, radars, runways, ammunition depots and other military installations, causing significant damage.
However, Saudi authorities did not confirm the Houthi claims regarding damage or casualties at the air base. Saudi Civil Defence issued an alert across Khamis Mushait governorate and later said the danger had passed. It urged residents to follow safety instructions and avoid gathering at affected locations or filming security operations.
Houthis warn of wider attacks
The Houthis said the attack responded to Saudi airstrikes in Yemen, alleging that Saudi fighter jets conducted more than 300 strikes across several provinces during five days. The group warned that it would continue attacking targets inside Saudi Arabia while Saudi military operations in Yemen continued.
It also threatened broader and more severe attacks if further strikes occurred.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority published an updated list of 77 vessels it accused of violating Iranian protocols governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The authority warned that listed vessels could face fines, detention or confiscation, while cooperating vessels could also face restrictions.
It further warned insurance companies, protection and indemnity clubs and classification societies against providing services to the vessels.
Hormuz shipping declines sharply
Meanwhile, preliminary tracking data showed commodity vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell to single-digit numbers per day over the weekend. The figure remained below the recent 10-day average of 14 vessels.
However, the data excluded vessels that may have switched off their tracking systems to avoid detection.
