Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal after substitute Mikel Merino scored a stoppage-time winner on Monday. The European champions will now face Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday after surviving a tense all-Iberian contest.
Played before a crowd of 70,649 at the Dallas Cowboys’ indoor stadium, the highly anticipated clash struggled to match expectations for long periods. However, the match came alive in injury time when fellow substitute Ferran Torres delivered a perfectly timed pass for Merino, who calmly finished to send Spain into the last eight.
The victory also marked the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey. The 41-year-old Portuguese captain, currently playing club football in Saudi Arabia, had confirmed before the match that this tournament would be his final World Cup appearance.
Spain’s Defence Holds Firm Again
Both teams entered the knockout match unbeaten, although Spain had been particularly impressive by not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament. Luis de la Fuente’s side maintained that remarkable defensive record while securing another narrow victory.
The match carried extra significance as it featured two generations of football stars. Portugal relied on veteran Ronaldo, while Spain looked to 18-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, whose performances have attracted worldwide attention.
Before kickoff, fans observed a touching tribute as an image of late Portugal forward Diogo Jota appeared on the stadium’s giant screen.
Spain nearly opened the scoring early when Dani Olmo created a clear opportunity for Mikel Oyarzabal, but the forward missed the target with only goalkeeper Diogo Costa to beat. Ronaldo later tested Unai Simon with a powerful effort from a tight angle, while Costa produced excellent saves to deny Yamal and Alex Baena.
Portugal came closest before halftime when Pedro Porro accidentally diverted Nuno Mendes’ shot onto his own crossbar. Mendes later left the field injured, reducing Portugal’s attacking threat.
Despite several tactical substitutions by Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, Spain found the decisive breakthrough in the first minute of stoppage time. Ferran Torres released Merino, who finished confidently to end a cautious contest and send Spain into the quarter-finals, while bringing Ronaldo’s memorable World Cup career to a close.
