Oyarzabal scores twice as La Roja dominate knockout encounter
Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday, producing a dominant display in their first knockout match of the tournament. La Roja will now face Portugal after the Portuguese side defeated Croatia later in the day.
Spain controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, enjoying 65 percent possession while registering 22 shots, including 10 on target. Austria, making their first World Cup knockout appearance in 44 years, struggled to cope with Spain’s relentless attacking pressure and disciplined defensive structure.
The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute when Marc Cucurella delivered a precise cross into the penalty area. Mikel Oyarzabal met the delivery with a composed finish into the bottom corner to give Spain a deserved lead before halftime.
Spain tighten grip after the break
Austria attempted to respond after the interval but found few openings against Spain’s organised defence. Instead, Spain doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Pedro Porro calmly finished after another well-worked attacking move.
The European side continued to dominate possession and restricted Austria to limited opportunities throughout the second half. As the match neared its conclusion, Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute, finishing confidently to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory.
Confident Spain continue defensive excellence
Lamine Yamal remained one of Spain’s standout performers, repeatedly troubling Austria’s defence with his pace and creativity down the flank. Meanwhile, Spain’s backline once again delivered a disciplined performance to preserve another clean sheet.
Austria, who reached the knockout stage after a dramatic late equaliser against Algeria during the group phase, could not reproduce that resilience against one of the tournament favourites.
Spain, the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions, recovered impressively after opening their campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde. Alongside Mexico, they remain one of the tournament’s strongest defensive teams, having yet to concede a goal.
Following the victory, Spain will now face Portugal in the Round of 16 at Dallas Stadium, with both European powers aiming to continue their World Cup campaigns.
