The Sindh government has announced a Pink Taxi Scheme to improve women’s transportation and mobility. The initiative follows the province’s Pink Scooty Scheme, which aims to promote women’s independence through personal transport.
Women-Centric Transport Expansion Gains Momentum
Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the government continues introducing measures to empower women. He added that authorities have directed traffic officials to act against men using Pink Scooties.
Memon said officials received complaints about women’s brothers riding the specially designated scooters. Therefore, the government instructed enforcement agencies to ensure the vehicles remain reserved for eligible women.
Meanwhile, the minister announced that the province will soon introduce an Electric Vehicle Taxi Scheme. He confirmed that the upcoming project will include a dedicated Pink Taxi component for women. However, he did not provide a timeline for the scheme’s official launch.
Government Highlights Success of Pink Scooty Programme
Memon said Sindh became Pakistan’s first province to introduce electric buses into public transport. He also defended the Pink Scooty Scheme against criticism regarding its current size.
According to the minister, only 150 women possessed driving licences when the programme began. However, nearly 25,000 women have now applied for licences through the initiative. He described the scheme as a major step toward women’s empowerment across Sindh.
Furthermore, Memon said the government would continue expanding the programme as demand increases. He added that providing scooters becomes the government’s responsibility once more women obtain licences.
The minister also highlighted Sindh’s revenue performance during his address. He claimed the Sindh Revenue Board achieved 24 percent growth, while the Federal Board of Revenue recorded 10 percent growth.
