Emergency Measures Activated Near Key Areas
Authorities in Punjab issued a warning on Thursday after officials reported that water levels in the Chenab River could rise by more than three metres following the opening of spillway gates at Indiaโs Salal Dam. Officials also warned about the possibility of silt flushing affecting areas near the Marala Barrage, prompting emergency preparedness measures across nearby districts.
Sialkot Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar confirmed that authorities had received an advisory regarding possible emergency silt flushing operations at the Salal Dam between May 21 and May 30. Consequently, officials placed the Marala Barrage and surrounding regions, particularly Bajwat, on high alert due to concerns about rising water levels and changing river conditions.
Furthermore, the district administration deployed the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority to monitor river activity and oversee precautionary arrangements in vulnerable locations. Authorities also advised residents to avoid unnecessary visits to rivers and canals and urged the public to follow safety instructions during the alert period.
Monitoring and Safety Arrangements Intensified
Meanwhile, officials activated the District Emergency Control Room to assist residents and coordinate emergency responses. Authorities stated that citizens could contact emergency helplines for information and guidance regarding the evolving situation.
In addition, the deputy commissioner directed all concerned departments to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the Chenab River. Restrictions were also imposed on the movement of people and livestock near riverbanks and riverbeds to reduce safety risks.
Authorities further instructed departments to keep barrage gates, telemetry systems, and flood response arrangements fully operational while continuously monitoring canal systems and water flow conditions. Communication among the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the Meteorological Department, and district administrations has also been strengthened.
Officials noted that last yearโs severe flooding in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers caused widespread evacuations across Punjab, increasing concerns about potential risks linked to rising water levels this season.
