Pakistanโs Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for agreeing to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, highlighting Islamabadโs active diplomatic role.
In a statement shared on social media, Sharif said he appreciated the decision made at Pakistanโs request, noting that it would allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to continue. He added that he spoke on behalf of both himself and Asim Munir, underscoring unified civil-military support for mediation.
Furthermore, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistanโs commitment to securing a negotiated resolution to the conflict. He expressed hope that both Washington and Tehran would respect the ceasefire and work toward a comprehensive peace agreement. He also pointed to the anticipated second round of talks in Islamabad as a critical opportunity to reach a lasting settlement.
Meanwhile, President Trump confirmed that the United States would extend the truce to give Iran time to present what he described as a โunified proposal.โ He stated that the decision followed direct appeals from Pakistanโs leadership, signaling Islamabadโs influence in the process.
However, Trump emphasized that while the ceasefire remains in place, US forces will continue enforcing the blockade on Iranian ports. This stance reflects Washingtonโs strategy of combining diplomatic engagement with sustained pressure.
Consequently, the extension provides temporary relief from escalation but leaves key issues unresolved. Analysts note that while Pakistan continues to facilitate dialogue, significant differences persist between the two sides.
As a result, the coming negotiations will play a crucial role in determining whether the ceasefire evolves into a durable peace agreement.
