A Senate subcommittee ordered an FBR official’s removal after accusing him of presenting misleading tax information. The meeting focused on tax collection and alleged tobacco sector tax evasion. Senator Saifullah Abro chaired the session on Monday.
During the proceedings, Abro expressed dissatisfaction with the FBR chief operations officer’s briefing. Consequently, he ordered the official to leave the meeting.
Committee Demands Greater Accountability
Abro accused some officials of damaging state institutions through inaccurate information. Furthermore, he directed authorities to recommend the officer’s immediate removal. He claimed several officers had caused serious administrative failures. Therefore, he urged stronger accountability within the revenue system.
The committee also requested details about tobacco-related advertisements from the Ministry of Information. Officials must submit records of awareness campaigns and media outreach. Abro questioned claims that only two tobacco companies were paying taxes. He stressed the need for stronger measures against tax evasion.
Senators Raise Tobacco Tax Collection Concerns
Senator Dilawar questioned weak tax recovery despite Rangers’ deployment at certain tobacco facilities. He also highlighted the sharp decline in tobacco prices.
According to Dilawar, tobacco once sold for Rs 1,800 per kilogram. However, buyers now showed little interest even at Rs 200 per kilogram.
Abro argued tax evasion should not continue where enforcement agencies remain present. Moreover, he urged authorities to improve digital monitoring systems.
The committee instructed officials to submit complete records of alleged tax losses. It also requested detailed information about enforcement efforts.
Abro additionally raised concerns about governance and financial management. He appealed for action against officials allegedly responsible for administrative failures.
