Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the establishment of a Trade Facilitation Board to streamline trade processes and address non-tariff barriers. The prime minister will chair the new board and oversee measures aimed at improving cross-border commerce.
During a meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the board would address issues across the trade supply chain. It will also prepare a roadmap for trade promotion and develop a Trade Facilitation Index to measure progress.
Government Plans Faster Port Operations
The prime minister directed authorities to work on an emergency basis to increase the capacity of the country’s ports. He also ordered the formation of working groups to improve port operations and coordination.
The groups will focus on port capacity, regulatory compliance, pre-arrival clearance and stronger coordination among relevant departments. They will also promote greater participation by small and medium-sized enterprises in international trade.
Reforms Target Importers and Exporters
The prime minister directed authorities to simplify transportation, clearance and other procedures at ports. He called for maximum possible facilitation for importers, exporters and the wider business community.
Officials informed the meeting that ongoing reforms had reduced port charges and significantly improved port utilisation. They also said authorities were expanding the submission of goods declarations before vessels arrive to speed up clearance.
The government will use the new board to monitor progress and address trade-related challenges. Further measures will focus on improving efficiency, reducing delays and strengthening Pakistan’s position in international commerce.
The meeting included ministers for commerce, finance, maritime affairs, national food security and economic affairs. Senior government officials and other advisers also attended the meeting.
