Security forces foiled a suicide attack on a military post near Miranshah in the North Waziristan district on Tuesday, according to security sources.
Officials said terrorists linked to Fitna al Khawarij attempted to ram an explosive-laden vehicle into the post. However, security personnel detected the threat in time and destroyed the vehicle before it could reach the target.
They added that four terrorists were killed during the swift response. Due to the high alert status of the area, the attack was successfully foiled and no damage was reported.
Security sources said Fitna al Khawarij refers to militants associated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan. They said the group launched the attack after facing setbacks in recent operations around Miranshah.
Officials further stated that over 20 terrorists have been killed in ongoing operations in the region over the past few days. These actions, they said, have weakened militant networks and reduced their operational capacity.
Security forces have now launched further clearance operations in the area to eliminate remaining threats. Authorities said all facilitators and perpetrators involved in the attack will be brought to justice.
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in militant violence, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since 2021. Attacks on security forces have increased in several districts.
Earlier, security forces killed at least eight militants in Darra Adamkhel, including two Afghan nationals linked to a banned group. On May 19, forces also eliminated 22 terrorists in North Waziristan.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, Pakistan’s security situation deteriorated in May due to rising militant activity in KP and Balochistan.
