Washington Seeks Progress on Trade, Energy and Defence Cooperation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday as Washington intensified efforts to strengthen relations with New Delhi following recent tensions over tariffs and changing regional dynamics.
After arriving in Kolkata, Rubio visited the headquarters of the humanitarian organisation established by Mother Teresa before travelling to New Delhi for meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other engagements.
According to the US State Department, discussions during Rubioโs visit will focus primarily on trade, energy cooperation, and defence relations. The four-day trip marks Rubioโs first official visit to India and will also include stops in Agra and Jaipur.
Meanwhile, successive US administrations have attempted to strengthen strategic ties with India to balance growing regional influence from China and Russia across the Indo-Pacific region.
However, bilateral relations experienced challenges after President Donald Trump imposed significant tariffs on Indian goods last year.
Regional Developments and Trade Concerns Shape Diplomatic Agenda
Although both countries later reached an interim understanding that reduced some tariffs, officials have yet to finalise a broader trade agreement.
Furthermore, analysts noted that Washingtonโs increasing engagement with Pakistan and diplomatic activity involving China generated additional concerns within Indian policy circles.
Energy issues also remained a central topic as regional developments complicated efforts aimed at reducing Indiaโs dependence on Russian energy supplies.
Rubio recently stated that the United States hoped to expand energy cooperation with India and increase American energy exports.
Additionally, discussions surrounding the Quad grouping, which includes the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, continued attracting attention as both countries sought broader strategic coordination.
Observers suggested that both governments now aimed to restore momentum in areas where common interests and policy goals continued aligning despite recent challenges.
