Claims emerge as Washington and Tehran exchange strikes amid Hormuz tensions
WASHINGTON: Israel has reportedly shared new intelligence with the United States regarding an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the matter.
The report surfaced as military tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate following renewed exchanges over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Israelโs embassy in Washington declined to comment on the report, while Iranโs mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The White House referred the newspaper to remarks Trump made during the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed Iran continued to target him, saying he remained at the top of what he described as Tehranโs list of potential targets.
Funeral slogans add to tensions
Meanwhile, crowds gathered in Mashhad for the funeral procession of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reportedly chanted slogans calling for revenge against Trump. State media footage showed mourners carrying banners and placards while chanting anti-US slogans during the ceremonies.
The demonstrations came as funeral events entered their final stages, with large crowds gathering around the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.
US-Israel coordination continues
Separately, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephone conversation on Thursday to discuss the evolving conflict with Iran.
According to reports, Trump briefed Netanyahu on recent US military operations in the Gulf, while Netanyahu reportedly raised concerns about a possible US decision regarding Tรผrkiyeโs participation in the F-35 fighter jet programme. He also discussed regional security issues and recent statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Although both leaders remain in close contact as the regional situation develops, a White House official said there are currently no plans for an in-person meeting. The latest developments underscore the continuing coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv as tensions with Iran remain high and diplomatic uncertainty persists.
