Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of Railways to improve passenger facilities and strengthen safety measures across Pakistan’s railway network. The prime minister issued the directives during a meeting with Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi in Islamabad on October 2.
Abbasi briefed Shehbaz on the ministry’s affairs and ongoing development projects. The meeting also covered other matters concerning the railway sector.
PM Stresses Railway Track Maintenance
Shehbaz emphasised the need for practical measures to ensure timely repairs and maintenance of railway tracks. He said passenger safety must remain a priority as Pakistan Railways works to improve its services.
The directive comes as the ministry continues efforts to address infrastructure challenges across the railway network. Earlier, Abbasi had also ordered divisional officials to implement recommendations concerning track safety.
The government has been pursuing several railway modernisation measures, including infrastructure upgrades, digitisation and improved passenger facilities.
Government Focuses on Freight Services
The prime minister also called for stronger freight operations through Pakistan Railways. He stressed that making freight services more effective remains essential for strengthening the railway sector. The ministry has previously outlined plans to expand cargo transportation and shift more freight movement from roads to rail. These efforts aim to improve logistics efficiency and reduce transportation costs.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Railways reported record revenue of Rs115 billion during fiscal year 2025-26. The ministry has linked the improvement to reforms, infrastructure development and greater focus on freight operations.
The latest meeting reflects the government’s continued focus on passenger safety, railway infrastructure and stronger freight services.
