LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a plan to distribute 50,000 tractors to farmers over the next three years. She described the initiative as the largest tractor distribution program in Punjab’s history.
The announcement came during a meeting of the Punjab Agriculture Department, where officials reviewed the performance of the Kissan Card program and the government’s agricultural mechanization initiatives. Moreover, the meeting focused on measures to strengthen the farming sector and improve agricultural productivity.
Government Expands Support for Farmers
Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government has taken practical steps to empower farmers through financial assistance and modern farming equipment. Furthermore, she claimed that no previous administration had distributed tractors on such a large scale across the province.
Officials informed the meeting that the Punjab government has disbursed Rs360 billion in interest-free loans under the Kissan Card program. They added that farmers have repaid 99 percent of the loans issued so far. In addition, around 80 percent of the borrowed funds were used to purchase fertilizer, reflecting the program’s focus on improving agricultural output.
Focus on Agricultural Modernization
During the briefing, officials also stated that urea prices have remained stable for the past two and a quarter years. Consequently, farmers have benefited from relatively consistent fertilizer costs while planning their crop production.
Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing Punjab’s agriculture sector through continued investment in mechanization and farmer support programs. She said the administration will introduce more initiatives to improve farm productivity, enhance agricultural efficiency, and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers across the province.
Meanwhile, the planned tractor distribution program is expected to play a key role in increasing mechanized farming and boosting agricultural development in Punjab.
