LAHORE: The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has made vehicle registration mandatory before the delivery of every new vehicle purchased in the province. Director General Excise Umar Sher Chatha announced the decision during a meeting with car manufacturers and motor branch directors.
Chatha directed officials to implement the policy across Punjab. Moreover, he instructed manufacturers and dealers not to hand over any new vehicle until the registration process is completed. Under the new system, car manufacturers will submit lists of their authorised dealers to the relevant motor branches. The department will then issue Dealer Vehicle Registration System (DVRS) licences to eligible dealers without delay.
Dealers to complete registration before handover
According to the new policy, vehicles purchased using a Punjab Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) will be registered through the authorised dealer before delivery to the buyer.
Chatha said the issuance of DVRS licences would begin as soon as the department received dealer lists from manufacturers. Furthermore, he revealed that 102 authorised dealers, including those in Lahore, already hold DVRS licences and currently provide vehicle registration services. Dealers presently charge a service fee of Rs2,000 for each vehicle registration.
However, the department is considering a slight increase in the fee to improve transparency and strengthen the registration system.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has directed all concerned institutions to ensure immediate compliance with the new policy. Officials believe the measure will streamline the registration process, improve record management, and ensure that all newly purchased vehicles are legally registered before reaching their owners.
