LAHORE: The Punjab government has extended the deadline for vehicle owners to obtain mandatory fitness certificates for one month. Now motorists can obtain fitness certificates by November 15, 2026. The decision giving motorists an additional month to complete the required inspections.
The deadline was previously set for October 15. The extension aims to provide citizens with more time to meet the requirements and avoid penalties for non-compliance.
The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s Smog Action Plan, which seeks to identify vehicles emitting excessive pollutants before the winter smog season intensifies.
Under the revised arrangements, vehicles covered by the regulations must undergo emissions testing at authorised Provincial Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS) centres. Vehicles that meet the prescribed standards will receive fitness certificates valid for one year.
However, certain private cars qualify for age-based exemptions depending on their engine capacity. Cars with engines up to 1,000cc are exempt for five years from manufacture, while vehicles between 1,001cc and 2,000cc receive six-year exemptions. Cars above 2,000cc qualify for seven-year exemptions.
Once the applicable exemption period expires, owners must obtain certification and renew it annually.
Authorities have warned that vehicles requiring certification may face fines and legal action if they operate without valid documents after the deadline.
Motorists should check their vehicles’ eligibility and contact authorised testing centres before visiting. The extension provides additional time to complete inspections and address emissions-related problems. The government hopes the initiative will help reduce vehicular pollution and improve air quality across Punjab during the approaching winter season.
