ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called for political moderation and broader consultations as opposition leaders explore a joint strategy amid rising tensions between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
An opposition delegation met Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad to discuss the political situation and the possibility of convening an All-Parties Conference (APC). The delegation included Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and other political leaders. JUI-F leaders, including Senator Kamran Murtaza, also attended the meeting.
Opposition Considers All-Parties Conference
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Fazlur Rehman said political consultations had produced several proposals, including an APC to develop a common agenda.
He urged political parties to consult one another and agree on a joint strategy. Moreover, he stressed that Pakistan needed political moderation to address its current challenges.
The JUI-F chief also clarified his position on recent negotiations between the government and opposition. Although his party did not participate in the talks, he said JUI-F had no objection to the dialogue process.
However, Fazlur Rehman expressed concern that the government’s approach had left little room for future negotiations.
“From what we have heard, the government has not left room for further negotiations in the future,” he said.
Fazlur Rehman Urges Political Dialogue
Fazlur Rehman emphasised that political leaders should maintain a democratic approach whenever they engage in negotiations. He also called for wider consultations to reduce tensions and help parties find common ground. Furthermore, he said an APC could provide a platform for opposition parties to agree on shared priorities. The participating parties would then develop a joint strategy through mutual understanding.
“We are all Pakistanis and stand with the country and the Constitution,” Fazlur Rehman said, highlighting the importance of national unity.
JUI-F Chief Backs PTI’s Right to Protest
Commenting on PTI’s ongoing long march towards Islamabad, Fazlur Rehman defended the right to peaceful political protest.
“We have also held long marches; it is a democratic right,” he said.
He added that authorities should not obstruct PTI if the party decided to reach Islamabad and stage a protest. His remarks came as political tensions continued following the breakdown of negotiations between PTI and the federal government.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders are considering further consultations on the proposed APC. The initiative could help political parties develop a common position on national issues and explore ways to ease the current political standoff.
