Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has claimed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and party provincial president Junaid Akbar have been arrested following the imposition of emergency rule in the province on Sunday.
PTI lawmaker Shahid Khattak announced the alleged arrests in a post on social media, urging supporters to gather in Peshawar and demonstrate in support of party founder Imran Khan.
The claims emerged after President Asif Ali Zardari approved emergency measures that suspended the provincial government. The development has further intensified tensions between the federal government and PTI.
However, the reported arrests had not been independently confirmed by authorities at the time of publication.
PTI Calls Supporters To Take To Streets
Khattak urged residents of Peshawar and surrounding districts to come out in support of Imran Khan. He also called on supporters in southern districts, including Karak, to block the national highway and join demonstrations.
The PTI leader appealed to party workers to gather in large numbers, saying he would join them wherever crowds assembled. His appeal followed the federal government’s decision to impose emergency rule in the province.
The party has opposed the federal government’s move, describing it as an attempt to undermine its elected administration. Afridi had previously vowed to resist any imposition of emergency or governor’s rule, calling such a step illegal.
Emergency Rule Deepens Political Tensions
President Zardari approved the emergency measures on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s federal cabinet. The federal government justified the decision by accusing the provincial administration of failing to adequately address militant violence.
The measures place the province under the authority of the governor, representing the federal government, and suspend the existing provincial administration.
PTI has condemned the decision, warning that it could worsen political instability. The party has also continued its protest campaign demanding Imran Khan’s release from prison.
The situation remains tense as supporters await further developments concerning the alleged arrests and the future administration of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
