KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) staged a strong recovery on Wednesday after investors returned to buying following the previous sessionโs sharp decline. Lower global oil prices and reduced domestic petroleum prices helped improve market sentiment.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index jumped more than 2,300 points during early trading. Investors also viewed the previous dayโs decline as a temporary correction rather than a shift in the broader market trend.
KSE-100 Index Surges in Early Trading
Buying activity dominated the market from the opening bell. By 9:35am, the KSE-100 Index had gained 2,334.41 points, or 1.30%, to reach 179,417.63.
Market participation remained strongly positive during the early session. As many as 283 stocks advanced, while only 33 declined and 247 remained unchanged.
Trading activity also accelerated quickly. More than 34.74 million shares changed hands through 14,689 transactions. The value of traded shares crossed Rs1.73 billion.
Some investors later booked profits, trimming part of the indexโs initial gains. Nevertheless, buying pressure remained dominant.
By 9:40am, the KSE-100 Index was still up 2,099.57 points, or 1.17%, at 179,182.79.
Market breadth strengthened further during this period. Advancing stocks increased to 323, compared with only 39 decliners. Meanwhile, trading volume reached 57.73 million shares worth Rs2.91 billion across 26,292 trades.
Broader Market Also Gains
The recovery extended beyond the benchmark index. The All Share Index gained 1,179.92 points, while the KSE-30 Index advanced 659.39 points.
Similarly, the KMI-30 and BKTI indices both recorded gains exceeding 1%. The widespread increases reflected strong buying across several major sectors.
Investors appeared encouraged by improved external conditions and domestic economic developments. The combination helped revive appetite for equities after Tuesdayโs steep correction.
Lower Oil Prices Boost Investor Sentiment
Market participants attributed the rebound partly to falling international crude prices. Oil prices continued their recent decline as expectations of sufficient global supplies increased.
Concerns about weaker demand also contributed to the downward pressure on crude prices. For Pakistan, lower oil prices can ease pressure on an economy that relies heavily on imported energy.
Cheaper crude can also reduce inflationary pressures. Additionally, lower energy costs can support businesses by reducing transportation and production expenses.
Petrol Price Cut Supports PSX Recovery
Investor confidence received another boost after the federal government announced a reduction in domestic petroleum prices.
The move is expected to lower transportation and production costs across various sectors. Moreover, investors expect cheaper fuel to support further moderation in inflation during the coming months.
Consequently, market participants increased their positions in banking, energy and other blue-chip stocks. Analysts said the latest developments could create a more supportive environment for equities.
Investors Watch Rallyโs Sustainability
Despite the strong recovery, analysts remain cautious about the marketโs next direction. They said continued institutional buying will remain important for sustaining the momentum.
Investors will also watch whether the KSE-100 can hold its gains after the initial surge. A sustained recovery could reinforce confidence in the marketโs broader bullish trend.
The early rebound suggests that many investors considered Tuesdayโs decline a temporary correction. In recent weeks, the PSX has benefited from improving macroeconomic indicators and renewed foreign portfolio investment.
Therefore, Wednesdayโs strong opening has restored some of the confidence lost during the previous session. However, the marketโs ability to maintain the recovery will depend on economic developments, investor participation and broader global conditions.
