Yemen’s latest military offensive against the Houthis has entered a major new phase with Saudi-led coalition air support.
The coalition confirmed its participation on Monday as Yemeni government forces launched fresh operations against Houthi positions. Around 100 fighter jets took part in dawn strikes during the newly announced “Dawn of Yemen” operation.
The operation follows recent Houthi advances across parts of Yemen, including areas near the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait. Meanwhile, government forces have begun efforts to reclaim territory held by the Iran-backed group.
Saudi Coalition Joins Yemen’s New Offensive
Saudi-led coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki confirmed the coalition’s involvement in the operation.
“100 fighter jets participated at dawn today in Operation ‘Dawn of Yemen’,” coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki wrote on X, using the name for the new offensive announced on Sunday. “Round-the-clock air support for the Yemeni armed forces on the ground.”
The announcement came after Yemen’s military reported a broad series of strikes against Houthi targets. The internationally recognised Yemeni government had declared a new campaign to retake territories still controlled by the Houthis.
Consequently, the latest offensive represents a significant escalation in the government’s effort to regain control over parts of the country.
Government Forces Target Houthi Positions
Yemeni government forces launched fresh strikes against areas under Houthi control on Monday.
Maj. Gen. Majed Abdullah Al-Nuzaili, spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, announced the military operations in a post on X. He said the latest action followed directives from the country’s political leadership.
The Yemeni Armed Forces had earlier announced the beginning of a battle aimed at reclaiming state institutions from Houthi control. The campaign also seeks to end what the government describes as the group’s coup.
“Our armed forces continue their military operations across various combat axes and fronts according to approved plans. Our armed forces executed 1,122 targets on Houthi militia infastructure across the Saada, Al-Jawf and Taiz,” said Al-Nuzaili.
He also provided figures concerning the reported results of the military operations.
“According to field reports, these operations resulted in neutralizing 1,747 militia elements and destroying or disabling 364 military vehicles, equipment, and supply transport units,” he said.
‘Dawn of Yemen’ Operation Targets Houthi Control
Yemen’s President Rashad Al Alimi announced the large-scale “Dawn of Yemen” operation on Sunday.
The campaign targets Houthi military capabilities and seeks to restore state institutions, liberate Sana’a and end the group’s control.
The president described the operation as a major moment for Yemen and expressed confidence in the country’s forces and their supporters.
“With the will of our people, the bravery of our forces, and the support of our brothers, Yemen will move toward a new dawn” vowed Al-Alimi on Monday.
The government’s announcement followed recent Houthi gains in western Yemen. The group has captured areas along the Red Sea coastline and territory around the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The waterway remains strategically important because it serves as a key chokepoint for international shipping.
Government Advances Near Bab al-Mandab
Government forces have also made advances around Bab al-Mandab as the offensive develops.
Yemeni government forces took control of Thubab near the Bab al-Mandab Strait on Monday. The move reportedly involved a flanking manoeuvre from the Kahbub Mountains.
Meanwhile, government forces are continuing their advance northward along Yemen’s western coast. Their movement is also directed towards the city of Mokha.
Houthi forces have reportedly faced pressure around Bab al-Mandab and Mayun Island as government troops push forward along the western front.
These developments have added another important dimension to the new military campaign. The government is attempting to regain strategic territory while advancing towards areas still under Houthi control.
Houthis Make Recent Gains
The latest government offensive comes after the Houthis made fresh gains across parts of Yemen.
The Iran-backed group captured swathes of the country’s Red Sea coastline during recent fighting. It also expanded its presence around the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The Houthis have been fighting Yemen’s internationally recognised government during a prolonged conflict that has devastated the country.
In September, the group launched a rapid offensive that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of combatants on both sides. According to UN figures, the fighting also forced more than 145,000 people to leave their homes.
The latest military developments therefore come against the backdrop of an already severe humanitarian situation.
Yemen Faces Prolonged Humanitarian Crisis
Yemen remains one of the world’s poorest countries and continues to face a vast humanitarian crisis.
The crisis has developed over years of conflict since Yemen’s civil war began in 2014. As fighting continues, the latest offensive has added another major military development to an already prolonged conflict.
The government says its operations are directed at restoring control, security and state institutions in Houthi-held areas. At the same time, the fighting continues to affect communities caught within the conflict.
President Al-Alimi stressed that civilians living in Houthi-controlled areas were not the targets of the military campaign.
On Sunday, he announced the launch of military operations aimed at recapturing the country’s remaining territories under Houthi control.
“Today we are embarking on a decisive phase in the history of our nation,” Al-Alimi said, adding that the state had made “great sacrifices” in choosing the path of peace.
Yemen Enters a New Military Phase
Al-Alimi said the operations were intended to restore security, rights and dignity for citizens living in areas controlled by the Houthis. He also stressed that those citizens were not targets of the military operations.
The latest developments have brought the Saudi-led coalition directly into the new government offensive. With 100 fighter jets providing air support, Yemeni forces are now conducting operations across several fronts.
At the same time, government troops are advancing around key areas of the western coast and near Bab al-Mandab. Their stated objective is to reclaim territory, restore state institutions and end Houthi control.
The Dawn of Yemen operation therefore marks a significant new stage in Yemen’s long-running conflict. As government forces push forward, Saudi-led coalition aircraft are providing air cover for the ground campaign against Houthi positions.
