Party leaders pay tribute to former prime minister’s democratic struggle and enduring political legacy
KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party District East organised a Quran recitation and prayer ceremony in Karachi to mark the 73rd birth anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, with party leaders describing her as a symbol of democratic resistance, public service and national unity.
The event was held at the Peoples Secretariat and drew senior party leaders, office-bearers, workers, women members and representatives of various city areas and subsidiary wings. PPP Sindh General Secretary Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi and PPP Karachi Division General Secretary Raoof Ahmed Nagori attended the ceremony alongside a number of district and local leaders.
Among those present were PPP District East Senior Vice President Sarwar Khan Ghazi, General Secretary Riaz Baloch, Khalid Latif, Farrukh Niaz Tanoli, Sindh Chief Minister’s spokesperson Syeda Aqra Fatima, Tahseen Abidi, Town Chairman Farhan Ghani, Lala Abdul Rahim, Muzammil Qureshi, Hakim Jiskani, Yasmeen Butt, Hussam Shamsi and Murtaza Baloch.
PPP leaders highlight Benazir’s struggle for democracy
Addressing the gathering, Senator Waqar Mehdi reflected on Benazir Bhutto’s political and personal journey, saying she played a historic role in the restoration of democracy and remained steadfast despite the pressures of military rule.
He said Benazir Bhutto was not only Pakistan’s first woman prime minister but also the first female prime minister in the Muslim world, adding that her sacrifices for democracy, people’s rights and national cohesion continue to define her legacy.
Prayers offered for Benazir Bhutto and martyrs of democracy
Waqar Mehdi said June 21 carries special significance because it marks the birth of a leader whose struggle still inspires PPP workers. He added that her ideology and commitment to public service remain a guiding force for the party.
The ceremony concluded with special prayers for Benazir Bhutto, the martyrs of democracy, and for peace, prosperity and development in Pakistan.
