Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel has achieved another historic milestone on Nanga Parbat. He climbed and skied the 8,126-metre peak without using supplementary oxygen. Moreover, the feat makes him the first person to ski all five of Pakistan’s 8,000-metre mountains without supplemental oxygen.
Historic Descent Completes Pakistan’s 8,000-Metre Challenge
According to Seven Summit Treks, the 38-year-old climber reached Nanga Parbat’s summit before completing a continuous ski descent to Base Camp. The expedition concluded successfully on June 30, 2026. Furthermore, the company described the achievement as a remarkable moment in high-altitude mountaineering.
Sources at Nanga Parbat Base Camp said Bargiel was part of a seven-member foreign expedition. The team began its summit push after the company’s rope-fixing team opened the climbing route. Subsequently, Bargiel skied from the summit to Base Camp without using supplementary oxygen.
The accomplishment completes a years-long project across Pakistan’s highest mountains. Previously, Bargiel skied down Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II, K2, and Gasherbrum I without supplemental oxygen.
Mountaineer Reflects on Years-Long Achievement
Last year, Bargiel also became the first person to ski from the summit of Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen. Earlier in his career, he completed ski descents from Shishapangma and Manaslu in Nepal.
In an Instagram post, Bargiel said he skied more than 3,700 vertical metres from Nanga Parbat’s summit via the Messner Route. He added that the descent completed a project he had pursued for several years.
Meanwhile, Bargiel thanked fellow climber Janusz Gob for supporting the ascent. He also expressed gratitude to his expedition team, weather advisers, and support staff for helping make the achievement possible.
