A one-month-old baby lost his hand after his family alleged medical negligence at a private hospital in Karachi.
Police registered a case against a doctor and three unidentified staff members at Pirabad police station.
The baby’s father said he took his son, Azmatullah, to a hospital in Orangi Town on August 31. The child had reportedly become unwell.
According to the father, Dr Yasir Inam instructed staff to insert a cannula into the baby’s hand. He alleged that staff members then bandaged the hand and administered several injections.
Family Claims Baby’s Hand Turned Black
The father said he returned four days later and found the baby’s hand had turned black. He claimed doctors prescribed medicine and assured him the infection would improve.
However, the child’s condition reportedly worsened over the following days. Consequently, the family took him to Jinnah Hospital for further medical treatment.
Doctors there allegedly told the family that an improperly inserted cannula had caused the infection. They reportedly informed the parents that amputation was necessary to save the child.
Police Seek Healthcare Commission Assistance
The baby’s father accused Dr Yasir Inam and three unidentified staff members of negligence. Police have also contacted the healthcare commission for assistance during the investigation.
Meanwhile, the private hospital administration presented a different account of the incident. It said the family visited the hospital in August and left after the cannula was inserted.
The administration claimed the family left without informing hospital staff about the child’s condition. It added that officials only recently learned about the amputation and have launched an internal investigation.
The hospital also said it was preparing to face legal proceedings. Police are continuing their investigation into the family’s allegations and the circumstances surrounding the baby’s injury.
