Six Injured in Busy New York Transit Hub
A stabbing incident at New Yorkโs Penn Station left six people injured on Sunday evening, raising security concerns just before Madison Square Garden hosts NBA Finals games.
The attack took place around 7 p.m. near West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, one of the main entry points to Penn Station. The station is one of the busiest transport hubs in the United States and is located directly beneath Madison Square Garden.
According to emergency officials, one person suffered serious injuries, while others sustained moderate or minor injuries. Several victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Authorities said the injured were expected to survive.
Amtrak Police took a suspect into custody at the scene. A knife was also recovered, according to reports. Officials have not yet released a confirmed motive, and the investigation remains underway.
The incident created panic among commuters and visitors during a busy evening in Midtown Manhattan.
Attack Comes Before Major NBA Finals Games
The stabbing happened one day before Madison Square Garden was scheduled to host Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
New York City is hosting the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. The Knicks are leading the series 2-0, creating major excitement across the city.
The arena is also set to host Game 4 on Wednesday. Large crowds are expected around Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, nearby hotels, restaurants, and public viewing areas.
Security was already tight because of the high-profile nature of the event. Multiple reports said President Donald Trump was expected to attend Game 3, leading to additional security measures around the venue.
Authorities had already announced stricter screening and crowd controls for the NBA Finals. The stabbing has now added fresh pressure on law enforcement agencies to secure the area.
Officials Move to Reassure Public
Officials praised the quick response of Amtrak Police and first responders. New York authorities said they were monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant agencies.
Penn Station remained under close watch as the investigation continued. Officials said there were no major service impacts after the attack, but commuters were advised to remain alert and expect increased security.
The incident has raised questions about public safety in crowded transport hubs, especially during major sporting events. Madison Square Gardenโs location above Penn Station makes crowd management more complex during high-attendance games.
The attack also comes as New York prepares for other major international sporting events. With thousands of fans expected in the city, authorities are under pressure to prevent further incidents.
For now, the suspect remains in custody, and investigators are working to determine what led to the stabbing. Security around Madison Square Garden and Penn Station is expected to remain heightened as the NBA Finals continue.
