Historic EV Consignment Arrives at Karachi Port
Pakistan has recorded a major milestone in its maritime and automobile sectors after the countryโs first dedicated Roll-on/Roll-off shipment carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles arrived at Karachi Port.
The vehicles were transported aboard the MV Grande Shanghai, a specialised vehicle carrier that reached Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited. Karachi Port Trust records confirmed that the vessel arrived on July 16 and was berthed at B-17.
The shipment represents one of the largest consignments of electric vehicles handled through Pakistanโs ports. It also demonstrates Karachi Portโs growing ability to accommodate modern vehicle carriers and manage large-scale automobile imports.
Unlike conventional container shipping, Roll-on/Roll-off vessels allow vehicles to be driven directly onto and off the ship through built-in ramps. This system reduces the need for cranes and separate lifting equipment.
The process can make vehicle loading and unloading faster, safer and more efficient. It also reduces the risk of damage that can occur when vehicles are repeatedly lifted or transferred between different cargo-handling systems.
Grande Shanghai Brings Advanced Vehicle-Carrying Technology
The Grande Shanghai is a modern Pure Car and Truck Carrier operated by Italyโs Grimaldi Group. It was delivered to the shipping company in August 2025.
The vessel can transport as many as 9,000 car-equivalent units across several decks. It was designed to carry electric vehicles, conventional cars, trucks and other wheeled cargo.
The ship measures approximately 220 metres in length and 38 metres in width. It is equipped with advanced environmental systems, including solar panels, high-capacity batteries and technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The arrival of such a large vehicle carrier reflects Karachi Portโs increasing integration with international automobile shipping routes.
It also signals growing confidence among shipping lines and vehicle importers in Pakistanโs port-handling infrastructure.
Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited managed the unloading operation after the vessel reached the designated berth. Port and terminal teams coordinated the movement of vehicles from the ship to secure storage areas.
The successful handling of more than 2,000 vehicles required careful planning, traffic management and coordination between port authorities, customs officials, shipping agents and terminal operators.
Maritime Minister Calls Arrival a Historic Development
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the shipment as a historic moment for Pakistanโs maritime industry.
He said the successful operation showed that Pakistani ports were becoming capable of handling advanced international shipping methods.
The minister noted that RoRo transportation is widely used at major ports around the world because it reduces cargo-handling time and improves operational efficiency.
He said the arrival of the vessel would support efforts to modernise Karachi Port and improve the countryโs vehicle import logistics.
The government hopes the successful operation will encourage more international RoRo services to include Karachi in their shipping schedules.
Regular vehicle-carrier services could reduce congestion associated with containerised automobile imports and provide manufacturers and importers with a more efficient supply route.
The development may also encourage investment in specialised port infrastructure, vehicle storage facilities, customs processing and inland transportation services.
Shipment Reflects Pakistanโs Growing Electric Vehicle Market
The delivery comes as demand for electric and hybrid vehicles continues to increase in Pakistan.
Consumers are showing greater interest in vehicles that offer lower fuel costs and reduced dependence on petrol. Several Chinese and international automobile companies have also introduced electric or plug-in hybrid models in the Pakistani market.
Pakistan previously received its first commercial shipment of BYD electric vehicles at Karachi Port in February 2025. Those vehicles arrived through Karachi International Container Terminal as completely built units.
The latest shipment is different because it represents a much larger consignment transported aboard a dedicated RoRo vehicle carrier.
The arrival of more than 2,000 electric vehicles could increase market availability and provide consumers with a wider range of models. However, the brands, specifications and expected retail prices of the imported vehicles were not immediately disclosed.
Growth in electric vehicle imports will also increase the need for charging stations, trained technicians, spare parts and battery-recycling facilities.
Without adequate charging infrastructure, the expansion of electric mobility may remain concentrated in major cities.
Karachi Port Moves Toward Modern Shipping Standards
The successful RoRo operation is being viewed as an important step in Karachi Portโs modernisation programme.
Pakistanโs main ports have traditionally handled vehicles through containers, conventional cargo vessels and limited car-carrier operations. Dedicated RoRo services could provide a faster and more organised alternative for large automobile consignments.
Karachi Port has also recorded an increase in maritime activity. It handled more than 2,000 vessel calls between July 2025 and June 2026, reaching that level for the first time in nearly eight years.
Authorities believe improved port operations can strengthen Pakistanโs position as a regional trade and logistics centre.
Faster vehicle handling could lower storage periods, reduce operational delays and improve the movement of imported automobiles from the port to dealerships and distribution centres.
The arrival of the Grande Shanghai therefore represents more than a single vehicle shipment. It reflects growing electric vehicle demand, expanding maritime trade and Pakistanโs efforts to adopt modern international cargo-handling practices.
The long-term impact will depend on whether RoRo vessels begin making regular calls at Karachi Port and whether the country develops the infrastructure required to support a larger electric vehicle market.
