The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has accelerated efforts to restore inactive airports across the country to strengthen air connectivity, improve regional transportation, and support economic growth. The decision emerged from a high-level meeting held at the authority’s headquarters in Karachi, where officials reviewed plans to bring several dormant airports back into operation.
PAA Director General Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed chaired the Karachi meeting. Among the attendees were senior representatives from airport services, engineering services, and the commercial department. During the session, officials directed relevant departments to fast-track the restoration process at key airports that have remained inactive for years.
Focus on Regional Air Connectivity
According to sources, authorities have prioritised the revival of airports in Turbat, Dalbandin, Dera Ismail Khan, and Saidu Sharif. In addition, officials discussed restoring operations at Sukkur Airport, New Gwadar Airport, and other aviation facilities across Pakistan.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to rehabilitate dormant aviation infrastructure and expand transportation networks in underserved regions. Improved air services are expected to enhance travel convenience, boost tourism, and create new opportunities for trade and investment.
Government Push to Restore Aviation Infrastructure
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence has instructed the Pakistan Airports Authority to expedite the operationalisation of all inactive airports nationwide. Earlier this month, Dera Ismail Khan Airport resumed operations after years of inactivity, marking a significant step in the government’s aviation development strategy.
Officials also reviewed matters related to a new private airline during the meeting, although authorities have not yet disclosed further details. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of modernising airport facilities to meet growing travel demands.
Established through a statutory notification on August 9, 2024, the PAA continues to focus on improving airport management, operations, and infrastructure development throughout Pakistan.
