Water, Roads and Power Get Major Focus
The federal government has proposed a development budget of more than Rs1.1 trillion for the financial year 2026-27. The proposal shows a strong focus on water resources, roads, electricity projects, education and digital infrastructure.
According to budget documents, Rs754.9 billion has been proposed for the development budgets of federal ministries. The Ministry of Water Resources is expected to receive one of the largest shares, with Rs179 billion proposed for its development projects.
The Cabinet Division has been allocated Rs72 billion. This amount is proposed for development schemes linked to members of parliament. The Ministry of Defence may receive Rs11 billion, while the Ministry of Defence Production has been proposed Rs1.1 billion.
Education, Technology and Climate Projects Receive Funding
The proposed development budget also includes key allocations for education and technology. The Federal Education Ministry is set to receive Rs36 billion. The Higher Education Commission has been proposed Rs41.19 billion for its development projects.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications may receive Rs20 billion. This allocation is expected to support digital growth, technology services and communication infrastructure.
The Ministry of Climate Change has been proposed Rs2.78 billion. The Board of Investment may receive Rs805 million. The Ministry of Interior has been allocated Rs16 billion, while the Ministry of Information is proposed to get Rs4 billion.
A separate allocation of Rs251.68 billion has been proposed for provinces and special areas. The Finance Division has been proposed Rs1 billion for development spending.
NHA and Power Projects Lead Corporate Allocations
The documents also propose Rs355 billion for corporations. Out of this amount, Rs264 billion has been allocated for the National Highway Authority. This makes road infrastructure one of the biggest priorities in the proposed development plan.
Electricity projects under the Power Division are proposed to receive Rs91 billion. Railway projects have been allocated Rs27.83 billion.
The National Assembly and Senate are scheduled to meet in Islamabad on June 5 for budget-related proceedings. The National Assembly session will begin at 5pm. The Senate will meet at 6pm.
The government aims to complete budget discussions and approve the proposals by June 24. Under constitutional requirements, the federal budget must be passed before June 30. It will take legal effect from July 1.
