Pakistan surrendered a lead before Wales secured a 3-3 draw in their Hockey World Cup Group D match.
The teams faced each other in Amsterdam on Monday in an exciting contest. Pakistan started strongly and scored during the opening minutes.
Abdul Rehman opened the scoring during the first quarter. Pakistan then protected their advantage until the quarter ended.
However, Wales responded strongly during the second quarter. They first converted a penalty corner before adding a field goal.
Wales Turn Match Around Before Half-Time
The two goals moved Wales ahead 2-1 before halftime. Neither team managed to change the score during the third quarter.
Pakistan then produced a strong response during the final quarter. Sufyan converted a penalty corner to restore parity at 2-2.
Rana Waheed soon put Pakistan ahead again with the team’s third goal. Pakistan appeared capable of securing their first victory.
However, Wales refused to surrender and continued pressing for an equaliser. They eventually earned a penalty stroke and converted it successfully.
Pakistan Waste Chances Against Determined Wales
The goal levelled the match at 3-3, with neither side scoring again. The teams therefore shared the points after the final whistle.
Pakistan missed at least six scoring opportunities throughout the match. Consequently, their inability to convert chances prevented them from claiming victory.
The national team had earlier suffered a 4-1 defeat against England. That result left Pakistan needing a stronger performance against Wales.
Pakistan will now face traditional rivals India on August 19. The match will serve as their final Group D fixture.
The national team must improve its finishing against India. Meanwhile, Wales will take confidence from their determined comeback.
