ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to attend the signing ceremony of the US–Iran agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, according to sources on Monday. The high-level visit highlights Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement in efforts aimed at easing regional tensions and supporting dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Top Civil and Military Leadership to Join Delegation
Sources said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will also accompany the prime minister. In addition, several senior federal ministers are expected to join the delegation during the official visit.
The ceremony is set to mark the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. However, officials noted that this agreement will serve as a framework, while detailed negotiations will continue in the coming months.
Diplomatic Efforts and Ongoing Negotiations
According to sources, the second phase of talks will focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, the easing of sanctions, and other key outstanding issues. These discussions are expected to continue for at least 60 days following the signing of the initial agreement.
Pakistan has played an active and facilitative role in the diplomatic process. Civil and military leadership have reportedly remained engaged in backchannel efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging dialogue between the two sides.
Moreover, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir have maintained close coordination throughout the process. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has held several diplomatic engagements with regional counterparts to support mediation efforts.
Framework Agreement Expected in Geneva
The signing ceremony in Geneva is expected to formalise a broader framework agreement between Washington and Tehran after months of negotiations involving regional and international stakeholders. Officials believe the development could help reduce tensions and open the door for further diplomatic progress.
However, detailed information regarding the agenda and participating delegations has not yet been officially released. Further announcements are expected closer to the ceremony as preparations continue for the high-level diplomatic event.
