The National Database and Registration Authority NADRA has introduced a fully digital firearms licensing system to streamline issuance and renewal processes across Pakistan. According to an official awareness video, the reform replaces the previous system that expired all licences annually on December 31.
Previously, the old mechanism created operational pressure as large numbers of citizens applied for renewal at the end of each year. In addition, individuals who obtained licences later in the year often lost valuable time from their validity period because all permits expired on a fixed calendar date regardless of issuance.
However, under the new policy, authorities now calculate licence validity from the exact date of issuance or renewal. As a result, each firearms licence remains valid for a full five-year period, ensuring fair and consistent duration for all applicants.
Furthermore, NADRA has fully digitised the licensing process, allowing citizens to complete issuance and renewal procedures more efficiently. Officials stated that the system aims to reduce administrative delays while improving accessibility for applicants nationwide.
In addition, the new framework is expected to ease pressure on offices that previously faced heavy workloads during year-end renewals. Consequently, the transition is designed to eliminate bottlenecks and improve service delivery.
Moreover, government officials emphasized that the initiative, developed in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, focuses on enhancing transparency and strengthening data management systems. They added that digital integration will help improve oversight and reduce procedural inefficiencies.
Overall, authorities believe the updated licensing structure will provide greater convenience to citizens while modernizing firearms regulation processes.
