Pakistan has urged the United Nations to mediate and promote peaceful dispute resolution to prevent Middle East conflicts, as tensions continue to rise globally. Speaking at the UN Security Council debate on strengthening mediation efforts, Pakistan stressed that diplomacy must act before crises escalate into violence and instability.
Pakistanโs Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the UN Charter and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He stated that preventing conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy remains a key pillar of Pakistanโs foreign policy. Furthermore, he emphasized that the international community should focus on stopping conflicts before they erupt rather than reacting after damage has already occurred.
Strengthening Mediation Through Early Action
Ambassador Ahmad described mediation as a vital tool for maintaining international peace and security. He said diplomacy can replace confrontation with dialogue and reduce human suffering through peaceful solutions. According to him, conflicts often emerge when negotiations are delayed and communication channels break down.
He also highlighted UN Security Council Resolution 2788, which Pakistan presented and the council unanimously adopted in July 2025. The resolution encourages the effective use of mediation, supports preventive diplomacy, and reinforces the role of the United Nations and regional organizations in resolving disputes peacefully.
Pakistanโs Role in Regional Peace Efforts amidst Middle East Conflicts
Meanwhile, Ambassador Ahmad pointed to Pakistanโs recent diplomatic engagement during the US-Iran conflict and broader Middle East tensions. He noted that Pakistan maintains strong ties with Iran, Gulf nations, and the United States, allowing it to support efforts aimed at achieving regional stability.
In addition, Pakistan proposed stronger early warning systems, increased funding for UN mediation mechanisms, and greater adherence to international law. The envoy concluded that Pakistan will continue promoting mediation, conflict resolution, and global peace as essential tools for lasting stability.
