The federal government has officially announced public holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram in connection with Ashura observances. The decision applies nationwide and covers all federal offices operating under both five-day and six-day working schedules.
The announcement comes as part of routine arrangements made every year during the Islamic month of Muharram-ul-Haram, which holds deep religious significance for Muslims across the country.
Federal Government Declares Ashura Holidays
According to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved public holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram 1448 AH.
These dates correspond to June 25 and June 26, falling on Thursday and Friday.
The government has confirmed that all federal departments will remain closed during these two days.
Both five-day and six-day working week offices will observe the holidays simultaneously, ensuring uniform closure across the country.
Sindh Government Also Announces Holidays
In parallel with the federal announcement, the Sindh government has also declared public holidays for Ashura.
The provincial administration confirmed that offices across Sindh will remain closed on the same dates.
This alignment ensures consistency in observance and allows citizens to participate in religious gatherings and processions without administrative disruptions.
Muharram Observance and Security Measures
Muharram-ul-Haram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar year and holds significant religious importance, especially the 9th and 10th days, known as Ashura.
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Muharram 1448 AH began on June 14.
During this period, security arrangements are intensified across major cities to ensure peace and public safety.
In Karachi, law enforcement agencies have already implemented detailed security plans for Muharram processions and gatherings.
Procession Security and Permit System in Karachi
Authorities have introduced strict regulations for participants joining major Ashura processions.
Individuals wishing to travel in designated vehicles during the 8th to 10th Muharram processions are required to obtain a valid permit sticker or pass.
Applications for permits were accepted at designated traffic offices, including DIG Traffic Karachi Office and Garden Headquarters, between June 22 and June 23, 2026, until 1:00 pm.
Applicants were required to submit multiple documents, including vehicle registration papers, CNIC copies of owners and drivers, passport-size photographs, and official introduction letters from relevant organisations.
Strict Guidelines for Issuing Travel Passes
Authorities have clarified that permits will only be issued to authorised entities.
These include law enforcement agencies, registered organisations, media groups, ambulances, and other officially recognised institutions.
Unregistered individuals or vehicles are not eligible for permits under the current system.
Officials also stated that a maximum of three individuals may travel under a single permit.
Enforcement and Compliance Measures
Security agencies have warned that strict action will be taken against any violations of the permit system.
Non-cooperation during security checks, submission of false information, or misuse of permits will result in immediate cancellation.
Authorities have emphasised that these measures are intended to ensure safe and peaceful Muharram observances across the country.
Nationwide Coordination for Ashura Holidays
The coordinated announcement of holidays by both federal and provincial governments reflects efforts to facilitate religious observance.
With public offices closed, citizens are expected to participate in Ashura-related gatherings with greater ease.
Meanwhile, security agencies continue to remain on high alert to maintain order during this important religious period.
